Indian Institute of Technology Bombay,(IITB), also known as IIT Bombay, is one of the premier technical institutions in India. Established in 1958, the second of its kind, IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance. IIT Bombay has consistently been at the forefront of excellence in engineering and technology education as well in Research.

IIT Bombay is one among the institutions selected by an empowered committee to be recognized by the Government of India as an Institution of Eminence. IIT Bombay is declared an Institute of Eminence on 09/07/2018 by the Ministry of Education.

IIT Bombay Infrastructure

  1. The IIT Bombay campus spans an expansive area of approximately 545 acres and is situated in Powai, East Mumbai, nestled between the serene Vihar and Powai lakes. 
  2. The campus is organized into clusters of buildings, with the academic area being the focal point. 
  3. It encompasses the main building, departmental annexes, and auditorium. 
  4. The department annexes are interconnected by a corridor known as the Infinite Corridor. 
  5. Adjacent to the Convocation Hall, most of the hostels are located. There are a total of 18 hostels, out of which two hostels (Hostels 10 and 11) and a section of the newly constructed Hostel 15 are designated for female students.
  6. One of the notable features of the campus is its proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which contributes to its abundant greenery and protection from the pollution that plagues the city. 
  7. This proximity has also led to occasional sightings of leopards and mugger crocodiles along the banks of Powai Lake, as they sometimes venture into the campus in search of prey.
  8.  The campus boasts a diverse avian population, with over 200 species of birds documented, including the Indian grey hornbill, Indian pitta, Vigors's sunbird, Ashy Prinia, Indian paradise flycatcher, Rufous woodpecker, and Oriental darter.
  9. The campus provides an array of sports facilities, including swimming pools, football, hockey, and cricket grounds, as well as tennis, basketball, squash, and volleyball courts.
  10.  The Students' Activity Center (SAC) serves as a hub for various cultural and extracurricular activities. Additionally, the campus is home to two high schools: a Kendriya Vidyalaya and the IIT Campus School.
