IIT Madras Admission Process
IIT Madras offers B.Tech and dual-degree B.Tech + M.Tech as its flagship courses. Admissions are entrance-based, and candidates must appear for the JEE Advanced examination. After the JEE Advanced results are declared, JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts counseling sessions for seat allocation.
JoSAA undertakes six rounds of counseling, providing candidates with multiple opportunities to secure their preferred courses and institutes.
Seat allocation is determined by factors such as JEE Advanced rank, availability of seats in different programs, gender, and category, ensuring a fair and transparent admission process. Once a seat is allocated to a candidate, they must confirm their acceptance by paying the required fees within the stipulated time and report to IIT Madras to complete the admission formalities and begin their academic journey.
In addition to B.Tech and dual-degree B.Tech + M.Tech, IIT Madras offers various PG-level courses, including MTech, MSc, MBA, MA, MS, and PhD programs. Admission to the MTech program is based on GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores.
For MSc programs, admission is offered based on IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for MSc) scores. Shortlisted candidates from GATE and IIT JAM exams undergo Personal Interview (PI) rounds.
The IIT Madras Ph.D. admission is based on marks obtained in the entrance examination conducted by IIT Madras. Students interested in pursuing PG courses at IIT Madras can apply for these programs and follow the specified admission procedures based on their chosen disciplines.
IIT Madras BTech Admission
BTech is the flagship program of IIT Madras, offered for four years in 12 disciplines. IIT Madras B.Tech programs include Aerospace, Computer Science &, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineering. However, the other basic eligibility and selection details for the program are mentioned below.
IIT Madras BTech Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply for IIT Madras B.Tech admissions, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- They must have passed the Class 12 examination with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) subjects (or 65% marks for SC, ST, and PwD candidates).
- They must have qualified for JEE Advanced.
IIT Madras BTech Selection Criteria
- Selection to the B.Tech program is strictly based on the marks scored by the candidates in the JEE Advanced entrance exam, followed by the JoSAA Counseling Process.
- The seat allotment is based on the college cutoff and the candidate's preference for courses and colleges.
IIT Madras Integrated Course Admission
IIT Madras offers a host of courses. It also offers three integrated courses for five years.
IIT Madras Dual Degree (BTech+MTech) Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for admission, you must have completed the final exam of the 10+2 system from a recognized central or state board, such as the Central Board of Secondary Education in New Delhi or the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination in New Delhi.

To be eligible, one must have completed the Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination from a recognized Board or University.

The final exam for the two-year course at the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.

Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) Level, or the High School Certificate Examination of Cambridge University, or the International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office in Geneva.

An exam administered by a public school, board, or university in India or abroad that is deemed equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

IIT Madras Dual Degree (BTech+MTech) Selection Criteria
- Admission to the program is strictly based on the scores obtained by the candidates in the JEE Advanced examination.
- Also, a candidate should appear for the JoSAA Counselling process for final selection to the program.
IIT Madras M.Tech Admission
IIT Madras MTech Admission Process
- All GATE-qualified candidates should register in the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) before completing an online application on the IIT Madras website.
- After completing registration, the candidate will receive the "COAP Registration Number". Use this number while filling out the registration form. After successful registration, IIT Madras will release the cutoff list for admission.
- The candidates must undergo a COAP counseling process for the selection process. Based on the GATE score, the merit list is prepared by the board and then offered seats based on the availability of seats at the institute. On acceptance of the seats through the COAP portal, the candidates can reserve their seats by paying the admission fee to the institute.
IIT Madras MTech Eligibility Criteria
Admission to the M.Tech program at IIT Madras follows specific criteria for different categories of applicants:
GATE Examination:
- A valid GATE score is mandatory for general applicants.
IIT Graduates:
- IIT graduates with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 (on a scale of 10) are eligible to apply without a GATE score.
Sponsored Candidates:
- Candidates sponsored by various DST-recognized Research and Development units, NIOT, educational institutions approved by AICTE/UGC/Government, or Government/Public Sector Undertakings can apply.
Quality Improvement Program:
- Direct admission under the Quality Improvement Program is based on tests and interviews.
MoU with Organizations/Industries:
- UOP candidates from organizations/industries with an MoU with the institute are eligible to apply.
Defence-sponsored Candidates:
- Candidates sponsored by defence establishments are also considered for admission.
IIT Madras MBA Admissions
IIT Madras offers a full-time MBA program for two years. The institute offers MBA Program in the following six specializations, i.e. Finance, HR & OB, Information Systems, Integrative Management, Marketing, and Operations.
IIT Madras MBA Admission Process
The admission process for IIT Madras MBA admission takes place in three stages: application, shortlisting (based on application), and WAT-PI for final selection as below -
Shortlisting
The applications are shortlisted based on the composite score calculated, giving due weightage to each of the following aspects:
- CAT score
- Academic records
- Work experience
- Academic diversity
- Gender
As the shortlisting is done based on a composite score, categorized relaxations are also maintained as per the norms of the Government of India.
WAT-PI (FINAL Selection)
The shortlisted candidates are selected to appear in the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). These are to evaluate academic knowledge, teamwork, and communication skills. The venue is usually set nearest to the place of stay of the candidate as in:
- Delhi
- Mumbai
- Roorkee
- Kolkata
- Chennai
The final selection is based on a score obtained by candidates for the weightage given to the following:
- Written Ability Test
- Personal Interview
- Composite scores
- Other forms of achievements
Note for students: The shortlisted candidates are usually called for a Personal Interview at the mentioned venue except the Foreign Nationals or NRI candidates. Such candidates have to take the interview online.
IIT Madras MBA Application Process
IIT Madras conducts common applications for admission to the MBA program. Candidates wishing to apply for all or one among the group need to submit the standard application form.
- Application for admission to the MBA program can be completed online by visiting https://doms.iitm.ac.in/.
- To fill out the application form correctly, follow the steps given below:
- Register by providing a valid email and phone number.
- Login using the password received on the provided email.
- Fill out the application form by providing the correct information.
- Internet Banking/ Credit Card/ Debit Card can pay application fees online.
IIT Madras MBA Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria in IIT Madras for MBA are broadly categorized for regular candidates, sponsored candidates, and foreign nationals or non-resident Indians.
Regular candidates
- Candidates should have completed a bachelor's degree from a UGC-recognised university with a minimum of 60% (General and 50) % (SCT/SC/PD).
- Students in the final year of graduation must fulfill all the requirements with provisional certificates and should submit provisional certificates within two months of program commencement.
- A valid CAT score.
- IIT graduates with a CGPA of a minimum of 8 out of 10 are exempted from CAT scores.
Non-Resident Indians/ Foreign Nationals
- Graduates from a UGC-recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks.
- A valid GMAT score is required.
- Final-year students are required to submit provisional certificates.
Sponsored Candidates
Sponsored candidates are required to meet the eligibility criteria based on two aspects. That is, whether they are defense personnel or sponsored by the company they are employed presently.
Defence Personnel
- Graduates from a government-recognized university with at least 55% marks in any discipline are eligible to apply.
- Defense officers are to receive admission through government agencies as they are exempted from national-level entrance tests.
Company Sponsored
- A valid score in CAT as conducted by IIMs.
- Graduate in any discipline from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks.
- 2-3 years of work experience in the sponsored company.
- Sponsored applications are to be forwarded by employers through appropriate channels.
IIT Madras MBA Selection Criteria
Candidates will be shortlisted based on a valid score in the CAT Examination. Only those whom the respective institute shortlists will be invited for the interview process (the Written Ability Test and Personal Interview). Foreign Candidates require GMAT Score for admission to the MBA program.
IIT Madras MA Admission
The Humanities and Social Sciences department at IIT Madras offers a full-time Integrated MA program for two years. The MA program at IIT Madras is offered in 3 electives, i.e. Development Studies, Economics, and English Studies.
IIT Madras MA Admission Process
- The admissions to IIT Madras MA are made solely based on performance in the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE).
- HSEE is conducted by IIT Madras every year to enroll students in their 2-Year MA programs.
- The minimum eligibility to appear for the entrance exam is a bachelor's degree from a recognized university and a 10+2 examination from a recognized board.
- The HSEE exam is very competitive, so one needs to prepare well for the entrance exam.
- HSEE consists of two parts: Objective Questions and Essay Writing. The duration of the exam is three hours.
IIT Madras MA Eligibility Criteria
Candidates belonging to the General, GEN-EWS, and OBC-NCL categories must secure a minimum of 60% aggregate marks at the 10+2 level. Candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PwD categories must secure a minimum of 55% aggregate marks.

Admission to MA program offered by IIT Madras will be granted based on a valid GATE Score.
IIT Madras MSc Admissions

IIT Madras MSc Eligibility
- Candidates must have a bachelor's qualification degree.
- Candidates must have scored 55% or 5.5 out of 10 CGPA for General or OBC (NCL) or EWS category and 50% or 5.0 out of 10 for SC, ST, or PwD category without rounding off the score.
IIT Madras MSc Selection Process
Admission to IIT Madras in the M.sc course is based on a national-level online entrance exam called Joint Admission Test (JAM). Once the Entrance Examination is commenced, A merit list based on Rank will be declared by IIT Madras.
IIT Madras EMBA Admission
IIT Madras offers mid-career working professionals a two-year Executive MBA (EMBA) program. Admissions to the program are offered through an entrance and interview conducted by the institute.
IIT Madras EMBA Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minimum of 60% marks.
- Candidates must also have at least three years of work experience.
IIT Madras EMBA Selection Criteria

IIT Madras Ph.D. in Engineering Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for the Ph.D. program in Engineering at IIT Madras are as follows:
- Master's degree in Engineering/Technology with an excellent academic record.
- Master's degree in Research in Engineering/Technology with an excellent academic record.
- 5 Year Dual Degree in Engineering or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree from Centrally Funded Technical Institute with an excellent academic record.
- Students with a 2 Year M.Sc. from IITs (entry through JAM) with a CGPA of 8.0 and above are exempt from qualifying in any National Level Examination.
- Students should have a valid GATE score or UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF or an equivalent qualification in the relevant area for the year of registration.
Additional Considerations:
- Suppose a student has a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology and has at least five years of relevant work experience after completing their Master's degree in Engineering/Technology. In that case, the Selection Committee may waive the test score requirement.
IIT Madras PhD in Sciences Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Ph.D. program in Sciences at IIT Madras, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Master's degree in Sciences with an excellent academic record and a valid GATE score or UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF/NBHM/INSPIRE qualification.
OR
- Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree/5 Year Integrated degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute with an excellent academic record.
Special Considerations:
- Students with a 2 Year M.Sc. from IITs (entry through JAM) with a CGPA of 8.0 and above are exempt from qualifying for any National Level Examination.
- Students who achieve more than 8.0 CGPA in M.Sc. in Science Departments of IIT Madras are directly admitted to the Ph.D. program in Sciences. Admission is subject to interviews at the departmental level.
IIT Madras Ph.D. in Humanities and Social Sciences Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Ph.D. program in Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Master's degree/dual degree or equivalent in the relevant discipline.
AND
Qualify in any of the following national-level examinations:
- UGC-NET or JRF
- CSIR-JRF
- GATE Score or equivalent qualification in the relevant area tenable for the current year.
OR
Qualify in an international-level postgraduate admission examination such as GRE (Non-HTRA).
OR
Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or 5 Year BS+MS Dual degree/5 Year Integrated degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute with an excellent academic record.

IIT Madras PhD in Management Eligibility Criteria
Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. program in Management at IIT Madras must meet the following eligibility requirements:
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any professional discipline with a minimum duration of four years or a Master's degree/equivalent in a relevant discipline with an excellent academic record is required to apply for a Ph.D. at IITM.
AND
Qualify in any of the following national-level examinations:
- GATE
- CAT
- UGC-JRF/NET
- CSIR-JRF
OR
Qualify in international-level postgraduate admission examinations such as:
- GMAT
- GRE (Non-HTRA)
OR
Non-HTRA (Half-Time Research Assistantship) candidates should have at least five years of managerial experience, which makes them exempt from the examination mentioned above criteria.

Candidates with a Master's degree in Engineering/Technology with an excellent academic record or a Master's degree in Research in Engineering/Technology in a relevant discipline are exempted from qualifying for a National level examination.

Candidates holding an MBA or a 2-year PG diploma from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) with a CGPA of 8 and above are exempted from qualifying in National level examinations.
Meeting one of the above criteria is essential for admission to the Ph.D. program in Management at IIT Madras.
IIT Madras Ph.D. & MS (Research) Selection Criteria
For Ph.D. programs, a valid Score in UGC NET, CSIR NET, or JRF is required, while for MS (By Research) programs, a good score in GATE is mandatory.
For research courses in Management, the candidates must have an MBA degree with a valid JRF or NET score.
